Twenty-three colleges for an applied-math senior who should not pay sticker price

Planned and synthesized by Claude Fable 5; web research by five Claude Haiku agents. Every dollar figure is a 2026–27 published value where one was found, otherwise a close estimate. Anything marked verify should be confirmed on the linked page before you rely on it.

Read this first: how the money works for us

The best math schools should be tuition-free for our family

MIT, Harvard, Yale, Penn and Johns Hopkins waive tuition for families under a published income line; Princeton's line is higher still. Based on Dad's numbers we should qualify, which means we'd pay housing, food and fees — about $15k–$28k a year, the same as a full-tuition merit win elsewhere, with better math. Admission is the hurdle, not the bill. Caltech and Stanford have no fixed line; Dad will run their calculators.

Guaranteed money lives at a handful of flagships

Alabama and UT Dallas publish stat tables: a 36 ACT with his GPA equals full tuition or better, no competition. UIUC is priced in-state with an Illinois-only full ride on top. Texas A&M adds a full-tuition-class package if he is a National Merit Finalist.

Everywhere else, merit is the only lever

Outside Tier C we should not count on need-based aid. Georgia Tech Stamps, UT Austin Forty Acres, Maryland Banneker/Key, UNC Morehead-Cain, NC State Park and others each pick 15–150 students a year from tens of thousands. Every applicant has near-perfect scores; competitions, research, and essays decide it. Apply to many.

The twenty-three

Tier A — guaranteed or near-guaranteed money, incl. in-state UIUC Tier B — competitive full ride / full tuition at strong math schools Tier C — best math anywhere, need-based only; should be tuition-free for us at six of seven

Tap a school to open the full details. “Full tuition” never includes room and board (~$12k–$22k/yr). “What we'd likely pay” is Dad's estimate for our family, with and without the award. Full prices are the out-of-state rate (in-state for UIUC).

1University of Alabama Tier AGuaranteed money· Tuscaloosa, AL What we'd likely pay / yr~$10k–$14k (merit only; no need-based aid expected) AwardPresidential Elite Scholarship DeadlineDec 4, 2026 Separate scholarship app?No
Why it's on the list
The single most reliable big award in the country for a 36 ACT. Math dept is solid (PhD program, applied math, honors sections, REU hosting) but not elite — he would likely reach graduate courses by junior year, so ask the department about early access. Honors College is strong.

Presidential Elite Scholarship (automatic for 36 ACT / 1600 SAT + 4.0 GPA)
Likely award / yr
Full tuition (~$35k OOS value) + first-year housing + $1,500/yr stipend + $2,000 one-time research/study-abroad

Why it's on the list
Math-and-CS-heavy student body (feels like a tech school), Dept of Mathematical Sciences with strong applied math, statistics, actuarial and computational tracks, active Putnam team. Best math quality among the near-automatic money schools.
Scholarship
Academic Excellence Scholarship (AES) — top tier; plus McDermott Scholars (full ride+)

Full price / yr before aid
~$55k OOS
What we'd likely pay / yr
AES: ~$10k–$15k; McDermott: ~$0
Notes
Any UTD scholarship over $1,000 qualifies a non-resident for in-state tuition (Texas law), which is why AES goes so far. Apply for McDermott too — it's a top-5 public full-ride program in the country.
3University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Tier A/BIn-state anchor + Illinois-only full ride· Urbana-Champaign, IL (in-state) What we'd likely pay / yrStamps: $0; Provost: ~$18k–$20k; no award: ~$37k (already below a full-tuition merit win at a private) AwardIllinois Stamps Scholars DeadlineNov 1, 2026 Separate scholarship app?No

Top-25 math department with real depth in applied and computational math, next door to a top-5 CS department and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications; Illinois Mathematics Lab for undergrad research, strong Putnam tradition, James Scholar and Campus Honors programs. Better math than the other low-cost schools — and the only one priced in-state for us.

What we'd likely pay / yr
Stamps: $0; Provost: ~$18k–$20k; no award: ~$37k (already below a full-tuition merit win at a private)
Notes
Apply to Mathematics in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Number of Stamps awards per year is not published (small — likely under 20). Even with no award this is the best math-per-dollar on the list and 2–3 hours from home; if he is not a National Merit Semifinalist it is probably the strongest 'sure thing'.
4Texas A&M University Tier AGuaranteed if National Merit Finalist· College Station, TX What we'd likely pay / yrNMF: ~$25k; non-NMF: ~$55k (no need-based aid expected) AwardNational Scholars DeadlineDec 1, 2026 Separate scholarship app?No

Out-of-state admission to UT is itself competitive (auto-admit is Texans only); the 36 ACT and the linear algebra story help. Dean's Scholars honors program in Natural Sciences is where he'd want to land.

Notes
If family income is under ~$200k, MIT is cheaper than most of the merit schools AND the best math. If above, expect to pay most of sticker. Perfect scores are common in MIT's pool — AMC/AIME results and the research/linear-algebra story matter more.

What to do, in order

He is a senior now. The first items are due within weeks; the earliest full-ride deadlines are October 15.

  1. This week (Sept 1–7, 2026)

Ask his school whether he made National Merit SEMIFINALIST (announcements go to schools ~Sept 9–10). This single fact decides whether Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Tulsa, UCF, Nebraska, Texas Tech become guaranteed full rides.

Applies to: Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Alabama NMF tier, UTD NMF tier · If Semifinalist: the NMSC Finalist application (essay, school endorsement) is due via the school in early–mid Oct.
  2. This week

Ask his counselor about NOMINATIONS: Morehead-Cain (UNC), Jefferson Scholars (UVA — not in the 20 but a full ride if his school nominates), and whether the school has a Robertson/Park relationship.

Applies to: UNC, Duke/Robertson, NC State Park · Nomination-based programs have internal school deadlines that come before the published ones.
  3. By Sept 30, 2026

    Submit Coca-Cola Scholars application ($20k, merit-only).

Applies to: External · Short online application; no essays in round 1.
  4. By mid-Sept 2026

Dad runs the net price calculators at MIT, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Penn, JHU and Caltech with the 2025 tax return. The first six should show tuition covered; this confirms it with our real numbers and tells us which single restrictive early app (Princeton/Harvard/Yale) is worth the slot.

Applies to: Tier C · Aid for fall 2027 is based on 2025 income (prior-prior year). Each school publishes an income line for free tuition; the calculators are the only way to be sure where we land.
  5. By ~Oct 1, 2026

Register for AMC 12 (Nov contests) through his school or a nearby host site. Also open FAFSA (opens Oct 1) and CSS Profile (needed by every private on the list).

Applies to: All competitive programs; all privates · An AIME qualification in Feb would land before most finalist weekends.
  6. Oct 15, 2026

UNC Early Action (+ Morehead-Cain); UT Austin priority application (+ Forty Acres app); Georgia Tech EA1 if Georgia resident.

Applies to: UNC, UT Austin, Georgia Tech
  7. Nov 1–2, 2026

UIUC Early Action (Stamps + Provost consideration, Illinois residents), Maryland EA (Banneker/Key), NC State EA + Park application, Michigan State (ADS), MIT EA, Caltech EA, Georgia Tech EA2 (~Nov 2), OSU EA, JHU ED I (only if first choice). Pick ONE of Princeton SCEA / Harvard REA / Yale SCEA — they are mutually exclusive and exclude other private early apps; public EAs and MIT/Caltech EA are still allowed alongside. Duke ED (Nov 2) and Penn ED are binding — only if he'd commit.

Applies to: UIUC, UMD, NC State, MSU, MIT, Caltech, GT, OSU, JHU, Princeton/Harvard/Yale (one), Duke, Penn · Restrictive early plans (Princeton SCEA, any ED) limit other early applications — pick deliberately. Public EA is usually allowed alongside SCEA.
  8. Nov 5–15, 2026

Regeneron STS (Nov 5, only with a research project); ~Nov 10 OSU Eminence essays/video; Nov 12 Elks MVS; Nov 15 Emory Scholars deadline. (Jack Kent Cooke, Nov 11, is need-based — we don't qualify.)

    Applies to: OSU, Emory, external
  9. Dec 1–4, 2026

Vanderbilt scholarship app (Dec 1), USC EA/merit (Dec 1), UT Dallas AES + McDermott (Dec 1), Texas A&M scholarship priority (Dec 1), Alabama scholarship priority (Dec 4), Duke Robertson app (verify date).

Applies to: Vanderbilt, USC, UTD, Texas A&M, Alabama, Duke
  10. Dec 15–16, 2026

Oklahoma deadline (Dec 15, NMF only); WashU signature scholar programs (Dec 16).

    Applies to: Oklahoma, WashU
  11. Jan 1–5, 2027

Regular Decision deadlines for every elite school not applied to early: Princeton & Harvard Jan 1; Yale, JHU, WashU Jan 2; Caltech Jan 3; MIT & Duke Jan 4; Penn Jan 5.

    Applies to: Tier C + Duke/WashU
  12. Jan–Mar 2027

Finalist interviews/weekends: MSU competition exam (late Jan/early Feb), Stamps/Forty Acres/Park/Eminence/Emory/USC finalist visits (Feb–Mar), NMF announcement (Feb).

Applies to: Tier B · Block these weekends now; overlapping finalist weekends are common.
  13. Before choosing (Apr 2027)

Email each finalist school's math department: (1) will CC Linear Algebra transfer, (2) can he place into upper-division/graduate courses as a freshman, (3) honors math sequence and Putnam/REU culture.

Applies to: All · Policies vary a lot; elite schools often want their own sequence; large publics are flexible. Get it in writing.
  14. May 1, 2027

    National decision day.

Applies to: All · Scholarship stacking rules differ — most schools give only the largest single institutional award, but outside scholarships usually stack.

Outside scholarships worth the hour

National Merit Scholarship Program$2,500 one-time from NMSC; the real value is the college-sponsored packages (Alabama, UTD, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Tulsa, UCF, Nebraska, Texas Tech = full tuition to full ride)Semifinalist application typically due early-mid Oct 2026 via the school

Determined by his Oct 2025 PSAT score vs. his state's cutoff. Semifinalists announced early Sept 2026; Finalist Feb 2027 (needs confirming ACT — his 36 covers it — plus an application & school endorsement).

Things that would still change this list

Still open

  1. State of residence: Illinois. Only UIUC is priced in-state; every other public on the list is out-of-state and Illinois has no reciprocity deals that help. UChicago and Northwestern (both elite math, both nearby) give no merit aid and their free-tuition lines are below the Tier C schools', so they cost more — run their calculators only if he likes them.
  2. National Merit Semifinalist status — decides row 3 and upgrades rows 1–2. Announced to schools early Sept 2026.
  3. The net price calculators — Dad to run them with the 2025 return to confirm the Tier C estimates.
  4. Math competition history (AMC/AIME) — the biggest lever for Tier B odds.
  5. Campus preferences (size, region, weather, religious affiliation) — none applied here.

What separates winners at Tier B

AMC 12 / AIME / USAMO results carry the most weight for math applicants — he can still sit the AMC 12 in November 2026 as a senior. Then: research or an independent project, the community-college linear algebra narrative (running out of math and going to find more), leadership, and specific essays about why applied math.

Considered and left off

Oklahoma (dropped in the family-cost update: NMF-dependent money, mid-tier math), Rice (dropped: only half tuition between $140k–$200k), Stanford (free-tuition line is $150k; still meets full need — worth a calculator run), Cornell/Columbia/Notre Dame (free-tuition lines at $125k/$150k/$150k), Michigan (top-10 math, but Stamps/Shipman awards are few and mostly partial), Purdue (Trustees $16k, not full), Wisconsin/Minnesota/Washington (no full-ride merit), UVA Jefferson (full ride but requires school nomination — ask the counselor), Clemson National Scholars and South Carolina McNair (full/partial rides, weaker math), Tulane/BU/Case Western (full tuition, weaker math), Harvey Mudd (superb math, only $10k merit; meets full need), Stony Brook (top applied math, little merit), RPI Medal (nomination window passed), Texas Tech / Tulsa / UCF / Nebraska (NMF full rides, weaker math), Northwestern / CMU / UChicago (no merit; their free-tuition lines are lower than the Tier C schools').
